我所思兮在太山,欲往从之梁父艰。

侧身东望涕沾翰。

美人赠我金错刀,何以报之英琼瑶。

路远莫致倚逍遥,何为怀忧心烦劳。


我所思兮在桂林,欲往从之湘水深。

侧身南望涕沾襟。

美人赠我金琅玕,何以报之双玉盘。

路远莫致倚惆怅,何为怀忧心烦怏。


我所思兮在汉阳,欲往从之陇阪长。

侧身西望涕沾裳。

美人赠我貂襜褕,何以报之明月珠。

路远莫致倚踟蹰,何为怀忧心烦纡。


我所思兮在雁门,欲往从之雪雰雰。

侧身北望涕沾巾。

美人赠我锦绣段,何以报之青玉案。

路远莫致倚增叹,何为怀忧心烦惋。


English Translation

In Taishan stays my dear sweetheart,

But Liangfu keeps us long apart;

Looking east,I find tears start.

She gives a sword to my delight;

A jade I give her as requite.

I'm at a loss as she is out of sight,

Troubling myself all the night.


In Guilin stays my dear sweetheart,

But Xiang Stream keeps us long apart;

Looking south,I find tears start.

She gives a lute to my delight;

A plate I give her as requite.

I'm full of grief as she is out of sight,

Worrying myself all the night.


In Hanyang stays my dear sweetheart,

But Mount Long keeps us long apart;

Looking west,I find tears start.

She gives a coat to my delight;

A pearl I give her as requite.

I'm ill at ease as she is out of sight,

Bothering myself all the night.


In Yanmen stays my dear sweetheart,

But snowfalls keep us long apart;

Looking north,I find tears start.

She gives some silk to my delight;

A tray I give her as requite.

I sigh and sigh as she is out of sight,

Tormenting myself all the night.

Four Stan-zas of Sorrow is the earliest seven-syllabic poem in Chinese literary history.

Why Chinese poems is so special?
The most distinctive features of Chinese poetry are: concision- many poems are only four lines, and few are much longer than eight; ambiguity- number, tense and parts of speech are often undetermined, creating particularly rich interpretative possibilities; and structure- most poems follow quite strict formal patterns which have beauty in themselves as well as highlighting meaningful contrasts.
How to read a Chinese poem?
Like an English poem, but more so. Everything is there for a reason, so try to find that reason. Think about all the possible connotations, and be aware of the different possibilities of number and tense. Look for contrasts: within lines, between the lines of each couplet and between successive couplets. Above all, don't worry about what the poet meant- find your meaning.
