How long can i not think of you by Zhang Xian
中文原文

伤高怀远几时穷。

无物似情浓。

离愁正引千丝乱,更东陌、飞絮濛濛。

嘶骑渐遥,征尘不断,何处认郎踪。

双鸳池沼水溶溶。

南北小桡通。

梯横画阁黄昏后,又还是、斜月帘栊。

沉恨细思,不如桃杏,犹解嫁东风。

English Translation

How long can i not think of you?

Nothing is more strong than love.

Sadness lets willow leaves drift in the rain,

your horse has gone far,

dust is still flying,

where could i hear your loving whispers again?

Two ducks play happily in the pond,

south and north are all the boat.

I lean on the attic where moonshine shines,

stay here i just think

it's better that i become the sakuras.

At least, sakuras can marry the east wind.

Why Chinese poems is so special?
The most distinctive features of Chinese poetry are: concision- many poems are only four lines, and few are much longer than eight; ambiguity- number, tense and parts of speech are often undetermined, creating particularly rich interpretative possibilities; and structure- most poems follow quite strict formal patterns which have beauty in themselves as well as highlighting meaningful contrasts.
How to read a Chinese poem?
Like an English poem, but more so. Everything is there for a reason, so try to find that reason. Think about all the possible connotations, and be aware of the different possibilities of number and tense. Look for contrasts: within lines, between the lines of each couplet and between successive couplets. Above all, don't worry about what the poet meant- find your meaning.
