《将仲子》

将仲子兮，无逾我里，无折我树杞。岂敢爱之？

畏我父母。仲可怀也，父母之言亦可畏也。

将仲子兮，无逾我墙，无折我树桑。岂敢爱之？

畏我诸兄。仲可怀也，诸兄之言亦可畏也。

将仲子兮，无逾我园，无折我树檀。岂敢爱之？

畏人之多言。仲可怀也，人之多言亦可畏也。

English Translation

My boy,please don't climb over the wall

and harm my wolfberry tree.

Hush,my parents will find you.

i really wanna tryst with you,but fear my parents get hurt.

My boy,please don't climb over the wall

and tread my lavender field.

Hush,my brothers will find you.

i really wanna tryst with you,but fear my brothers get angry.

My boy,please don't climb over the wall

and pluck the iris on my window.

Hush,people will find you.

Why Chinese poems is so special?: The most distinctive features of Chinese poetry are: concision- many poems are only four lines, and few are much longer than eight; ambiguity- number, tense and parts of speech are often undetermined, creating particularly rich interpretative possibilities; and structure- most poems follow quite strict formal patterns which have beauty in themselves as well as highlighting meaningful contrasts.

How to read a Chinese poem?: Like an English poem, but more so. Everything is there for a reason, so try to find that reason. Think about all the possible connotations, and be aware of the different possibilities of number and tense. Look for contrasts: within lines, between the lines of each couplet and between successive couplets. Above all, don't worry about what the poet meant- find your meaning.
